Australian Southern Photography was born out of a great passion and respect for photography and is much more than a photographic service.
Our mission is to provide a space for people to come together to explore, experiment, learn and collaborate through the photographic medium.
Our philosophy is to be authentic and bold. To be courageous, take artistic risks while being prepared to ‘fail’.
We welcome one and all. Browse our workshops, retreats and services online and sign up to our newsletter to discover how you can realise your photographic dreams.
Drawing on 30+ years of experience in photography, Emma Brasier created ASPhoto out of a long-held desire to experience a supportive, collaborative and creative space for people to showcase their work, share their knowledge. We do this through photographic workshops, retreats, artistic collaborative projects and happenings, exhibitions, commissions. Anything your imagination can produce.
“Let us first say what photography is not. A photograph is not a painting, a poem, a symphony, a dance. It is not just a pretty picture, not an exercise in contortionist techniques and sheer print quality. It is or should be a significant document, a penetrating statement, which can be described in a very simple term – selectivity.”
Berenice Abbott
At ASPhoto we celebrate the act of looking: of observing light and its intensity, how it falls, reflects and plays in the world, making a selection of what it is we see and what we know. We celebrate the meeting place of ideas and technology – where the natural phenomenon of the rising and setting of the sun and the moon can be seen through a lens, released and burnt to film, pixel or paper, leaving a vision that may become iconic or fade as our memories do. As our imagination is, limitless and free.
“A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it. It is, in a word, effective.”
Irving Penn
