📸 Teen Photographic Workshop: Capturing Light Through the Lens

Workshop Overview

Light is at the heart of every photograph—without it, there’s no image. In this hands-on teen workshop, we’ll explore how cameras capture light, and how different choices—angle, exposure, shadows, reflections—can transform the way we see the world.

Through guided activities, outdoor shooting, and creative challenges, participants will learn how to use light not only to take pictures but to make art. Teens will discover how the camera “sees” differently than our eyes, and how playing with light can tell powerful visual stories.

✨ Workshop Theme: Capturing Light

Light shapes everything—from golden sunsets and neon glows to reflections in glass and shadows on walls. In this workshop, we’ll uncover the science and the art of light in photography.

We’ll ask questions like:

• How does a camera record light differently from our eyes?

• How do shadows, highlights, and reflections change a mood?

• How can you use light to tell your own story?

📸 What We’ll Do

Welcome + Kick-off

• What is light in photography? How do cameras “see” it?

• Share what inspires you—bring along a favourite photo (yours or one you admire).

Light Experiments

• Explore how light changes with angle, direction, and intensity

• Play with shadows, reflections, and contrasts

Photo Safari: Chasing Light

• Head outdoors to the Duthy Street courtyard

• Capture different types of light: soft vs harsh, direct vs diffused, natural vs artificial

• Learn how to freeze or enhance light effects with simple camera techniques

Creative Prompts

• Find dramatic shadows

• Capture reflections (glass, water, metal)

• Shoot against the light: experiment with silhouettes

• Look for unexpected sources of light (streetlamps, windows, even screens)

• Tell a story with light: mystery, joy, calm, or energy

Group Reflection

• Share a favourite photo + give it a title

• Discuss: how did light change your image?

• Explore how photography can shift the way we see the everyday world

🎉 Showcase

All photos will be curated into a digital gallery and featured in the Nature Festival’s online showcase—celebrating teen creativity and their unique way of capturing light.
